General Education Assessment
Each undergraduate college at GW has a well-developed program of general education that is designed to meet university goals and, when appropriate, standards set by professional accrediting agencies. All students are required to take one four-credit writing course their freshmen year and two writing-in-the-disciplines courses as upper class students.
Columbian College of Arts and Sciences
To ensure undergraduate students are engaged and immersed in the breadth and diversity of the arts and sciences and to meet Standard 12 of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Columbian College of Arts and Sciences faculty approved a new general education curriculum that began in fall 2011. The fundamental elements of the curriculum are perspective, analysis, and communication. Courses representing each of these elements are required in a range of disciplines to offer a learning environment focused on developing rigorous analytical skills.
The new general education curriculum was created with the belief that Columbian College students should:
• participate actively in the political, social, cultural, and physical world surrounding them;
• learn to analyze a variety of problems from different disciplinary perspectives;
• work both independently and collaboratively; and
• leave college with the confidence that they can make a difference in society.
